Our Field Trip Program

At the JK Community Farm, we are passionate about connecting students to their food and the farmers who grow it. Students are naturally curious and creative thinkers, and we hope to help develop a solid foundation for understanding the natural world, nutrition and agriculture. We believe that food education is the foundation building a lifelong commitment to food justice and empowering healthy eating.

The JK Community Farm offers educational field trips for students of all ages to explore the world outside of their classroom. They begin to understand the connection between healthy soil, healthy plants and healthy people. Students gain confidence in making food choices. Students explore subjects such as soil, compost, edible plant parts, plant life cycles, pollination, pest control, the benefits of organic and chemical-free food, as well as nutrition. The JK Community Farm education programs can serve all ages and locales from Pre-K through 12, university students, and adults.

Self-Guided Field Trips

Our self guided field trips are new to our food education programming at the request of our wonderful community. They have been designed to help students explore the JK Community Farm and make connections with your students’ curriculum and nature.

Our hope is for students participating in distance learning to get outside and learn in nature. Our education guides were carefully curated to meet the Virginia Standards of Learning for each grade level and integrated into the JK Community Farm.

Please ask students to be gentle with our plants as a they are growing to feed families in our community in need of our help.

Traditional Field Trips

Field Trips are a great opportunity to see farming up close while learning about sustainable vegetable production and the value of food security. Field trips usually include a tour of the farm, a farm activity, a game, and a healthy snack. JK Community Farm field trips can be tailored to meet a class’ specific interests and lesson plans. Our farm manager, Mike Smith, has endless agricultural facts that he loves to share with students. We work with students of all ages, but ask that field trips are limited to 50 students.
