The JK Community Farm distributes its yield in partnership with our partners Loudoun Hunger Relief, Food For Others (Fairfax), and Arlington Food Assistance Center. Our partners then distribute this sustainably grown produce and protein to families and food pantries in their respective counties.
As the population of Loudoun County has increased, the number below the poverty line has also increased and so has the number of families and individuals that Loudoun Hunger Relief can help. This past year, LHR directly served more than 8,000 individuals through 67,000 visits and distributed over 1.6 million pounds of food, serving up to 70 families per day. Ultimately, the goal of LHR is to provide support and assistance so that families can live in the community without a need for their services.
Established in 1995, Food for Others obtains and distributes free food to the hungry of Northern Virginia and supports food programs of other community-based organizations. They provide a channel for people to help their neighbors by actively volunteering their service. Food for Others is Northern Virginia’s primary safety net for those needing food when an emergency strikes, and for the growing number of working poor who are unable to make ends meet and need to supplement their inadequate food supplies.
Since 1988, the Arlington Food Assistance Center has obtained and distributed groceries, free of charge, to people living in Arlington who cannot afford to purchase enough food to meet their basic needs. While hunger might not seem to be an issue in a county like Arlington, the high cost of living and the current economic situation causes many families struggle to make ends meet. Supplemental groceries from AFAC mean that families can remain in their homes, workers can stay on the job, children are ready to learn, and mothers and babies have the nutrition they need.
